On the evolution of the ground state in the system UxLa1−xS: Polarized neutron diffraction and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism study
نویسنده
چکیده
In the UxLa1−xS system there is an abrupt loss of the long-range ferromagnetic ordering found in pure US at a critical concentration xc ∼ 0.57, which is far above the percolation limit. As the magnetic ground state in such a system can be strongly affected by small variations of the 5f localization, we have investigated a set of samples with different x by polarized neutron diffraction and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The neutron results are consistent with early measurements performed on pure US. Even at the lowest U content (x = 0.15, below xc) the shape of the induced form factor (f(Q)) is comparable with that found for x = 1 and is well reproduced by either a U or a U state. The ratio between the orbital and the effective spin moments in the XMCD measurements confirms this result, but the evolution of the shape at the M5 edge suggests an abrupt change in the distribution of the electrons (holes) in the 5f density of states around xc. متن کاملSpin state transition in LaCoO3 studied using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism.
Using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism at the Co-L(2,3) edge, we reveal that the spin state transition in LaCoO3 can be well described by a low-spin ground state and a triply degenerate high-spin first excited state. From the temperature dependence of the spectral line shapes, we find that LaCoO3 at finite temperatures is an inhomogeneous mixed-spin state syste...
متن کاملMagnetic circular dichroism in the L2,3 x-ray fluorescence of Fe and Co
the L2,3 x-ray fluorescence spectra of magnetized Fe and CO excited by circularly polarized synchrotron radiation exhibit magnetic circular dichroism. The results are compared to the energy resolved spin polarized densities of states given by first-principles calculations.
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Recent progress in the development of dichroic Bragg coherent diffractive imaging, a new technique for simultaneous three-dimensional imaging of strain and magnetization at the nanoscale, is reported. This progress includes the installation of a diamond X-ray phase retarder at beamline 34-ID-C of the Advanced Photon Source. The performance of the phase retarder for tuning X-ray polarization is ...
